Quick Details
This is not another wine tasting near Lisbon. This is the only private producer of the legendary Carcavelos wine in all of Portugal. The winery was established in the late 1970s and produces a wine with roots going back centuries — a white fortified wine with a protected denomination that almost disappeared entirely. In 1 hour, the owner takes you through the vineyard and winery, explains the history and production methods of this extraordinary wine, and guides you through a tasting of 3 wines: a white wine from Arinto, Galego Dourado and Ratinho grapes, a red fortified wine from IG Lisboa, and the legendary Carcavelos white fortified from the Villa Oeiras 7-year blend.

Visit the only private producer of Carcavelos wine
Fifteen minutes from Lisbon, in Barcarena, sits one of Portugal’s most remarkable wine stories. This small family winery — established in the late 1970s — is the only private producer of Carcavelos wine in the country. Carcavelos is a white fortified wine with a protected denomination dating back centuries, once famous across Europe and nearly lost entirely. The owner has dedicated decades to keeping this tradition alive, and on this 1-hour tour he takes you through the vineyard, the winery, and the history behind every bottle. The tasting covers 3 wines: a white still wine, a red fortified from IG Lisboa, and the jewel of the collection — Carcavelos white fortified, Villa Oeiras 7-year blend. Travis called it “the best wine tasting I’ve ever had.”

Highlights
The Only Private Producer of Carcavelos Wine in Portugal Carcavelos is one of Portugal’s oldest and most historically significant wine denominations — a white fortified wine once served at the courts of European royalty, which came close to disappearing in the 20th century as urban development consumed its vineyards. This family winery is the last private producer keeping the tradition alive. Travis described it as “the best wine tasting I’ve ever had” — and the reason is this: you cannot taste Carcavelos wine like this anywhere else in the world.
The Owner Gives the Tour — Not a Hired Guide This is not a corporate winery experience. The owner — the person who has devoted decades to producing this wine — takes you through the vineyard, the winery, and the tasting personally. Travis described “getting a tour with the owner and meeting his family and dogs.” Yulia P. praised “insightful and informative commentary.” Katie Laurence said Daniel “was great” and “really generous with the wine.” This is what a family winery feels like.
Three Wines That Tell the Full Story The tasting is designed to show the full range of what this estate produces: a white still wine that showcases the estate’s grape varieties, a red fortified that demonstrates the winemaker’s range beyond Carcavelos, and the star — the Carcavelos white fortified, Villa Oeiras 7-year blend. Each wine is presented in context, so by the time you reach the fortified, you understand exactly what makes it extraordinary.
Perfect for Hen Parties, Couples, and Wine Enthusiasts Katie Laurence visited for a hen party and described it as “absolutely fantastic” with the team being “so accommodating.” Yulia P. brought her family and called the winery “an absolute gem.” At €39 per person for a 1-hour guided experience with the producer, this is one of the best value premium wine experiences anywhere near Lisbon — and one of the most personal.
Fifteen Minutes From Lisbon — Completely Off the Tourist Circuit Barcarena is 15 minutes from central Lisbon and virtually unknown to tourists. While everyone else is visiting the same wine bars and restaurants in the city, this tour takes you to a working winery producing a wine with royal heritage — in a family setting that no commercial operator can replicate.
