To get to know better the remarkable Pico Island vineyard culture, it is suggested to visit the “Lajidos” of “Criação Velha” and “Santa Luzia” for this pedestrian route on trails of the vineyards. Along the way, you will find typical local buildings comprising cellars, stone walls and lava soil pyramids that support and protect the vineyards near the sea. The landscape reflects the people’s ability for survival in the struggle for their livelihood. The itinerary includes a visit to the Wine Museum, located in an old Carmelite Convent House. The museum, which has an interesting viewpoint with a privileged view of the neighboring island of Faial, presents and keeps different buildings containing the structures, devices and utensils necessary for the production of typical wine and spirits. The museum has a traditional vineyard and a valuable collection of century-old “Dragoeiros,” a species of flora endemic to Macaronesia.

The Pico Wine Tasting was a highlight of our trip! Each of the three wines had such a unique flavor, reflecting the volcanic soil of the island. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the local winemaking tradition. Highly recommended!
