Our guided tour begins at the historic mill, where our local producer will take you through every step of the traditional rum-making process — from freshly cut sugarcane to the final distillation. You’ll learn about the island’s centuries-old techniques, the distinctive aroma of the fermentation process, and the craftsmanship behind each bottle.
To finish, enjoy a Masterclass Tasting featuring seven unique rums, each revealing a different profile and story. The tasting includes a bottle of water and a sample of Madeira Sugarcane Honey, a local delicacy that perfectly complements the rum.
This immersive experience blends history, flavor, and culture — a true taste of Madeira’s heritage.

Our Producer
Anyone visiting our historic producer in the village of Porto da Cruz gets to experience one of the main pieces of living evidence of the island’s glorious sugar production, at the beginning of the 20th century.
Built in the beginning of the 20th century (1927), although equipped with machinery from the 19th century, the Porto da Cruz mill is one of the most striking examples of the importance of the sugarcane trade in Madeira Island. In terms of heritage, it is also a museum of major significance.
It is dedicated exclusively to the production of sugarcane rum according to the original process, including the “Branca” rum and the “Envelhecida 970 Reserva” rum.
Our Tour
If you visit the island between the months of March and May when the sugarcane harvest begins, you can witness the sounds, movements, and smells of fermentation, albeit from a safe distance due to modern safety restrictions.
During the rest of the year, it is possible to observe the machines and to understand the mechanism through interactive devices.
Our rum distillery tour will start at the mill where our producer will present the whole process; in the end, we have a Masterclass tasting which includes seven different rums, a water bottle, and Madeira Sugarcane Honey.

A fantastic place to discover Madeira’s local rum tradition! 🥃 North Mills Distillery offers a great mix of history, craft, and tasting. The distillery itself has a lot of character, with old equipment and displays that show how sugarcane is turned into rum. The atmosphere is authentic and welcoming.

Lovely distillery with a nice little exhibition of the tools used in rum production. The shop is well equipped and the employees are friendly. The rum was delicious and so was the poncha.

A true decades-old sugarcane rum distillery. Unique. This is the distillery, where the authentic machines with which centuries ago they started making rum and poncha have been preserved. And they are still active! I don't know how they keep them! Sit and drink a poncha under the shade of the burena trees outside the factory shop. Poncha tastes different there!
