Discover the history and artistry of the iconic Portuguese azulejo during a hands-on tile painting workshop set on a local farm near Évora. The azulejo — the painted and glazed ceramic tile — is far more than architectural decoration. Over centuries, it has evolved alongside Portuguese culture, capturing the country’s history, art, and traditions. In this workshop, you’ll paint your own ceramic tile inspired by the aromatic plants grown on the farm. You’ll work with the traditional format known as “figura avulsa,” a style developed in Portugal during the 17th and 18th centuries, featuring simple central motifs painted in a single color — the classic cobalt blue. The experience begins with a guided visit to the farm, where you’ll learn about the plants grown on site and enjoy a herbal infusion tasting. Afterwards, under the guidance of a local artisan, you’ll learn the basic techniques of traditional tile painting and create your own piece to take home. Your painted tile will later be fired in a ceramic kiln and delivered in person or sent by post on an agreed date.
