Carcavelos Wine Journey — 6 Portuguese Wines near Lisbon

Starting at €76 | 2.5 Hours | Parties of 4 to 10 | Barcarena

Quick Details

This is the deeper version of the Carcavelos experience. While the 1-hour tour focuses on the winery’s own wines, the Journey expands to cover all of Portugal — 6 wines from different regions and grape varieties, each presented with the context of where it comes from and what makes it distinctive. One sparkling, four still wines representing the breadth of Portuguese viticulture (Alvarinho, Encruzado, Trincadeira, and others), and the jewel at the end — a glass of Carcavelos white fortified from the Villa Oeiras blend, produced by Portugal’s only private Carcavelos producer. Throughout the 2.5 hours, Portuguese nips and dips accompany each wine, enhancing both the food and wine experience.

Taste 6 Portuguese wines from every region

Fifteen minutes from Lisbon, Portugal’s only private Carcavelos wine producer hosts one of the most informative and personal wine experiences available near the capital. The Wine Tasting Journey covers the full map of Portuguese viticulture in 2.5 hours — one sparkling, four still wines from regions including the Minho, Dão, Alentejo, and Lisboa, and one fortified: the legendary Carcavelos white, Villa Oeiras blend. Each wine arrives with context — the grape varieties, the region, the climate, the story — paired with traditional Portuguese nips and dips designed to enhance the tasting. MeatWare PDB described “extraordinary food.” Katie Laurence praised Daniel for being “really generous with the wine.” Yulia P. called the winery “an absolute gem.”

Itinerary

  • Arrival at the winery in Barcarena. Welcome and introduction to the estate, its history as Portugal’s only private Carcavelos producer, and an overview of the journey through Portuguese wine regions ahead
  • Vineyard and winery tour — guided walk through the vineyard and production facilities. Learn about the Carcavelos denomination, the grape varieties grown on the estate, and the traditional methods used to produce fortified wine
  • Wine journey begins — the tasting opens with a sparkling wine. The guide presents the wine’s region, grape variety, production method, and tasting notes. Portuguese nips and dips arrive alongside
  • Four still wines — one by one, wines from different Portuguese regions are presented. Each arrives with the story of its region, its grape variety, and what makes Portuguese viticulture so diverse. Typical varieties include Alvarinho from the Minho, Encruzado from the Dão, and Trincadeira from the Alentejo. Nips and dips continue throughout
  • The Carcavelos — the journey ends where it must: a glass of Carcavelos white fortified wine, Villa Oeiras blend. The guide explains the history of the denomination, what makes this wine unique, and why it almost disappeared entirely
  • Wine shop visit — browse and purchase bottles directly from the producer. 7. Departure — total experience approximately 2.5 hours.

Highlights

A Journey Through Every Portuguese Wine Region — In One Glass at a Time Portugal has more native grape varieties than almost any other wine country in the world. This 2.5-hour experience takes you through the most important of them — from the crisp Alvarinho of the Minho to the rich Trincadeira of the Alentejo — with each wine explained in the context of its region, its climate, and its character. By the end you will understand Portuguese wine in a way that no restaurant tasting menu can deliver.

The Only Place in the World to Taste Authentic Carcavelos Wine The experience ends with a glass of Carcavelos white fortified — a wine with royal heritage dating to the 18th century, produced exclusively at this estate. You cannot taste this wine at another private producer because none exist. Travis described the winery as “the best wine tasting I’ve ever had.” Yulia P. called it “an absolute gem.” This is the most historically significant glass you will drink near Lisbon.

Six Wines, Portuguese Nips and Dips, 2.5 Hours — No Rushing The format of the Journey is generous by design. Six wines over 2.5 hours means each one gets the time and attention it deserves — with food pairings that are Portuguese in character and chosen to enhance rather than distract. MeatWare PDB described the food as “extraordinary.” Katie Laurence noted the team was “really generous with the wine.” This is not a tasting where you feel rushed to move on.

The Difference Between the 1-Hour Tour and the Journey The 1-hour Carcavelos Wine Tasting focuses on the estate’s own wines — three bottles, the winery story, and the Carcavelos denomination. The Journey adds the full map of Portugal — covering six wines from different regions — making it the choice for anyone who wants to understand Portuguese wine comprehensively, not just the Carcavelos story. If you are serious about wine, this is the one to book.

Fifteen Minutes From Lisbon — Completely Unlike Anything in the City Most wine experiences near Lisbon happen in a restaurant or a wine bar. This one happens at a working winery where the owner produces the wine, knows every vine, and genuinely wants to share what he knows. The combination of an intimate family setting, a rare product, and 2.5 hours of guided education makes this the wine experience that visitors to Lisbon consistently describe as the one they did not expect — and the one they remember most.

HIGHLY recommend it! Travis

If you’re in Lisbon, you have to visit this winery!!! Had an incredible time getting a tour with the owner and got to meet his family and dogs. This was by far the best wine tasting I’ve ever had! They produce a special fortified wine and are releasing their first batch this year, they already have a white delicious wine out as well. They also have a full tasting of different Portuguese wines from every region. I learned so much about the wine scene in Portugal and the process of winemaking (& making Carcaveloa wine—a highlight of my trip in Portugal. 💖
