Douro & Tua Valley — Wine, Heritage and Wild Landscapes Day Tour

Starting at €236 | 7 Hours | Parties of 2 to 20 | Favaios

Quick Details

Favaios is one of those villages that most travellers never find — and those who do rarely forget it. Perched above the Douro in the heart of the Moscatel country, it has built its identity around two things: bread and wine. Your day begins here, with a guided visit to the Museum of Bread and Wine before the morning opens into the valley below. Two of the region’s most respected family-run wine estates follow — one celebrated for its Douro reds and whites, the other for the legendary sweet Moscatel de Favaios — with tastings at both and a long traditional lunch in between. The afternoon takes you deeper still, into the Tua Valley: a wild, historically charged landscape where the Tua River cuts through a protected natural park and two scenic viewpoints — Ujo and Ilha do Tua — reveal a side of Northern Portugal that few visitors ever reach. Private, guided and entirely unhurried — this is the Douro beyond the obvious.

Douro & Tua Valley Wine Tour | Private Day

Begin your morning in Favaios, one of the Douro’s most characterful villages, where the Museum of Bread and Wine tells the story of a community shaped by its land. Two family wine estates follow — the first a respected Douro producer with a peaceful, intimate atmosphere; the second famous for its sweet Moscatel de Favaios, one of Portugal’s most distinctive wines. A traditional Portuguese lunch at the estate gives the day room to breathe before the afternoon journey into the Tua Valley, a wild and largely undiscovered landscape with viewpoints over the Tua River that stop you in your tracks. Private, fully guided, and built entirely around the flavours and landscapes of this extraordinary corner of the Douro.

Highlights

Favaios — The Village That Bread and Wine Built Most visitors to the Douro never make it to Favaios. Those who do discover a village unlike any other in the region — compact, proud and entirely defined by its two great products. The Museum of Bread and Wine is not a tourist attraction but a genuine piece of living heritage, and your guide brings it to life with the kind of local knowledge that no guidebook can replicate.

Two Estate Tastings — Two Completely Different Wines Few tours in the Douro offer the chance to taste at two distinct estates in a single morning. The first is a respected family-run producer of Douro reds and whites, chosen for its quality and its quiet, unhurried atmosphere. The second is the home of Moscatel de Favaios — one of Portugal’s most distinctive and celebrated wines, sweet and aromatic, unlike anything produced elsewhere in the valley.

Moscatel de Favaios — A Wine Worth Travelling For The Moscatel de Favaios is not simply a dessert wine — it is a cultural landmark. Produced from the Moscatel Galego Branco grape grown on the high schist terraces above Favaios, it has defined this corner of the Douro for generations. Tasting it at source, at the estate where it is made, is an experience that no wine shop or restaurant visit can replicate.

The Tua Valley — Wild, Unspoilt and Almost Unknown The afternoon drive into the Tua Valley takes you far from the tourist trail and into one of Northern Portugal’s most dramatic and least-visited landscapes. The Tua River flows through a protected natural park, and the viewpoints at Ujo and Ilha do Tua reveal a wilderness of steep forested gorges and mirror-still water that feels genuinely remote. This is the Douro’s wilder, quieter cousin.

Private, Guided and Built Around You From Favaios to the Tua Valley, this entire day is yours. There are no shared groups, no fixed pace and no generic itinerary. Your guide is local, knowledgeable and genuinely invested in showing you something real. Absolute recommendation! Sarah Donnelly

I've done several wine tours in Portugal and this was by far the most unique. Favaios is a village I never would have found on my own and the Museum of Bread and Wine was a genuinely fascinating start to the day not the typical tourist experience at all. The two estate tastings were completely different from each other and discovering the Moscatel de Favaios at source was a real highlight. The lunch was enormous and delicious. But the Tua Valley in the afternoon was what truly set this apart wild, dramatic and completely empty of tourists. Our guide was exceptional throughout. One of the best days of our entire trip to Portugal.

This was a wonderful tour Henrik Brandt

We chose this tour specifically because it went beyond the standard Douro cruise and vineyard visit and it delivered on every level. The Museum of Bread and Wine in Favaios was a lovely and unexpected way to start the morning. The first estate was beautifully run and the wines were excellent. The Moscatel tasting at the second estate was something we are still talking about weeks later sweet, complex and unlike anything we had tried before. Lunch at the estate was generous and unhurried. The Tua Valley in the afternoon felt like stepping into another world entirely. Private, well paced and genuinely special.

Highly recommend! Inês Carvalho

As a Portuguese person I thought I knew the Douro well. This tour showed me how wrong I was. Favaios and the Moscatel culture were things I had heard of but never properly experienced, the museum visit and the tasting at the estate finally gave them the context they deserved. The family wine estate was intimate and warm, exactly the kind of place that gets lost when tourism becomes too commercial. The Tua Valley was the surprise of the day dramatic, silent and completely wild. Our guide was knowledgeable, relaxed and clearly passionate about this part of the country. Highly recommended even for those who think they already know Portugal.
