Douro Valley Grape Harvest Experience in Armamar

Pick and stomp grapes on a historic Douro Valley estate

On a centenary estate in the heart of the Douro Valley, dating back to 1256, the grape harvest is still done by hand — the same way it has been for centuries. During September, two session options open up the experience to visitors: a morning harvest from 10am to 1:30pm, focused on grape cutting among the terraced vineyards; and an afternoon harvest from 3pm to 6:30pm, which adds traditional foot stomping (pisa) to the full experience. Both sessions begin with a guided visit to the estate’s winery and vineyards, and close with a tasting of three wines alongside a board of regional cheeses and charcuterie. A genuine encounter with one of Portugal’s most celebrated winemaking traditions.

Highlights

A Centenary Estate Since 1256. The estate’s history dates back to 1256 — one of the oldest documented agricultural properties in the Douro Valley. Participating in the harvest here means being part of a tradition that has continued for nearly 800 years.

Two Ways to Experience the Harvest. The morning session is focused and efficient — pure grape cutting in the terraced vineyards. The afternoon session is the full experience, adding the iconic tradition of foot stomping (pisa) in the stone lagares.

Grape Stomping in Stone Lagares. The afternoon pisa takes place in traditional stone lagares, the ancient pressing vessels used in the Douro Valley for centuries — an increasingly rare sight in modern Portuguese winemaking.

Douro Terraces at Their Most Beautiful. September harvest season is when the Douro Valley is at its most spectacular — the terraced vineyards heavy with ripe grapes, the river glowing in the afternoon light.

Taste What You Helped Create. Both sessions end with a tasting of 3 wines from the estate, paired with a board of local cheeses and charcuterie — a direct reward for the morning or afternoon’s work.
