My partner and I went on the cork factory tour in December in Algarve. Even though it was low tourism season, the cork factory tour remained open and it actually meant we had a private tour with the host. The host was so well informed and told us a lot of great information about the cork industry. My partner and I were a little surprised there were no cork trees (this was just the factory tour) so we asked our host where we could see some cork trees. She had a great recommendation for a lovely picnic spot nearby!

This factory offers a fascinating insight into the history and modern practice of cork farming, harvesting and processing. An already-interesting tour was made much better by the enthusiasm and knowledge of our guide. Tours are conducted in Portuguese, English and French, with different guides leading each. You will learn about cork trees and how they are managed, what happens to the cork when it is first brought into the factory, and the lengthy process by which it is turned into corks for bottles, and a wide variety of other applications. Examples of these are available for sale in the shop, including handbags and purses, hats, clothing, and an astonishing range of small items. Cork is a vital part of Portuguese agriculture and industry, and it's well worth the visitor's time to learn a little bit about it.

From now on I will never look at a cork stopper the same way again. The tour is very educational and introduces you to the first steps of the processing. Our guide gave good explanations with the necessary time to answer questions. It soon becomes clear that cork is a labor-intensive and incomparable natural product where craftsmanship and knowledge (although there are fewer and fewer companies) are passed on from generation to generation. A nice ending to our visit to the Algarve.
