Watch cork being stripped from centuries-old oak tree

Deep in the Alentejo hills near Grândola, cork has been harvested from the same oak trees for generations — a slow, skilled process that takes place only once every nine years. This 2-hour guided tour takes you by Jeep through the estate’s mato, farmland, and riverside paths to the heart of the harvest, where you watch experienced cork strippers work the trees by hand using traditional tools. Along the way, visit the cork stacks and learn how the bark is graded and prepared. The route passes through some of the most unspoilt terrain in the Alentejo Litoral, with the option to reach the estate via the spectacular Vale do Gaio dam road.

Highlights

Cork Stripped Live, Not Re-enacted. This is a working estate during active harvest season — guests watch skilled workers strip cork from centuries-old trees in real time, the same way it has been done in the Alentejo for generations.

Once Every Nine Years. Cork oak trees can only be harvested once every nine years, making this a genuinely rare seasonal window. Visiting during the extraction period means seeing something most people never will.

Wild Alentejo Terrain. The Jeep route crosses mato, open farmland, and riverside paths in one of the least-visited stretches of the Alentejo Litoral — landscape that hasn’t changed in centuries.

The Vale do Gaio Route. Guests who approach via the Vale do Gaio dam road experience one of the most dramatic natural entrances to any farm tour in the region — a road across the top of the dam with sweeping reservoir views.

Private, Maximum 4 Guests. The Jeep holds up to 4 people, keeping the experience genuinely personal and unhurried — no large groups, no tour bus atmosphere.

Great Experience ! Brian Crumlin

An extraordinary experience we watched the cork workers strip the bark by hand from trees that are hundreds of years old. The Jeep ride through the mato and along the riverside was stunning, and our guide explained everything in perfect English. Completely unlike any farm tour we've done before

Very good experience! Tommy Pedersen

We visited during the peak of the cork harvest season and it was genuinely magical. Seeing the red trunks of the freshly stripped trees against the Alentejo landscape, and watching the workers move through the grove with such skill and speed it's something you don't forget. The route via the dam was spectacular too.

Worth every cent Ben Bheula

A hidden gem in the Alentejo. Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable, the estate is wild and beautiful, and the cork stripping is something most tourists never get to see up close. We were a group of four and the private Jeep format made it feel very personal. Worth every cent
