Make authentic Pastel de Nata from scratch & taste Port wine

Portugal gave the world two things it can’t live without: Pastel de Nata and Port wine. In this 2.5-hour class in Lagos, you get to make one and taste the other — together, in the same afternoon. An expert local chef walks you through the full Pastel de Nata recipe from scratch: the pastry shell, the custard filling, the oven bake. When your tarts come out golden and caramelised, the chef guides a Port wine tasting designed to show exactly why this pairing has been a Portuguese institution for centuries. All ingredients and equipment provided, recipe card included, groups of 2 to 13. Adults only due to the wine tasting.

Itinerary

  • Arrive at the Lagos cooking studio — exact meeting point confirmed after booking. Welcome from your chef and introduction to the history of Pastel de Nata and its relationship with Port wine
  • Pastry making — learn to prepare and laminate the flaky dough that forms the iconic shell of every Pastel de Nata. Hands-on for all participants
  • Custard filling — the chef guides you through the preparation of the traditional custard, including the correct spice balance, consistency, and temperature

Highlights

The Two Most Iconic Things in Portugal — In One Experience Pastel de Nata and Port wine are Portugal’s most recognisable exports. Most visitors try one or the other. This class gives you both — made and tasted in the same 2.5 hours, with an expert chef explaining exactly why they belong together. It’s the most authentically Portuguese food experience available in the Algarve

You Make It From Scratch — Every Single Step This is not a demonstration. You make every element of the Pastel de Nata yourself — from laminating the pastry dough to mixing the custard and placing the tarts in the oven. By the end you will have made your own batch from scratch, with the confidence and the recipe card to repeat it anywhere in the world

Port Wine Tasting Guided By Your Chef The Port wine tasting is not an afterthought — it’s a structured part of the experience. The chef explains the style of Port selected, its flavour profile, and why the richness of the custard and the caramelised pastry shell make this pairing one of Portugal’s great culinary traditions. You leave with context, not just a glass

Small Groups, Personal Attention, Genuine Connection With a maximum of 13 participants, this is an intimate class where every guest gets hands-on time at every stage and personal guidance from the chef. The small group format also makes it one of the most social experiences in Lagos — guests consistently describe the connections made over the cooking table as one of the highlights of their trip

The Perfect Lagos Experience for Food and Wine Lovers There are cooking classes and there are wine tastings — but finding both in one well-designed experience, in one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns, is rare. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends, or solo, this class consistently ranks as one of the most memorable things to do in Lagos

fun local family activiity Ayrel Gonzalez

Our family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids - 14, 11, 6) booked the pastel de nata cooking class last minute and are so glad it worked out. It was probably one of highlights of our travels in Portugal. Jo, the chef, was very engaging and knowledgeable and did a great job explaining each step. Our kids had a blast and we were all so thrilled with the final product - it didn’t last long, we ate everything all up. Would love to try another cooking class with Jo and would recommend to anyone traveling in the Lagos area.
