About the Shepherd & Goat Cheese Workshop

Experience rural Portugal in its most authentic form with a unique combination of shepherd life and artisan cheese making in Serra dos Candeeiros.

Your morning begins walking alongside a real working shepherd and his goats across the limestone trails of the Natural Park. As you follow the herd through this peaceful landscape, you’ll learn about traditional grazing practices, seasonal rhythms, and the deep connection between land, animals, and local families who have preserved this way of life for generations.

After the shepherd walk, the experience continues inside a traditional cheese dairy, where you will discover how fresh goat cheese is made using age-old techniques and local ingredients. Using milk from the herd you’ve just walked with, you’ll take part in a hands-on workshop and learn the essential steps of artisan cheese production — from curd formation to shaping your own fresh cheese.

This 3.5-hour experience blends nature, culture, and gastronomy, offering a genuine insight into sustainable rural life in central Portugal. Ideal for families and small groups, it provides a meaningful connection to the countryside — and at the end, you’ll take home the cheese you made yourself as a delicious reminder of the day.

Why This Experience Is Different

Unlike commercial tours, this experience is rooted in real daily life. The shepherd is not performing for visitors — you are joining his routine. The cheese dairy is not staged — it is where local production truly happens.

By participating, you are directly supporting a rural family business and helping preserve traditional Portuguese agricultural practices.

Unique! Sonya Miteva

You just have to be a shepherd for a morning. It's really super fun!! Miguel is a really good guide with a lot of knowledge about nature, goats, and crops. The shepherd shows you everything about the goats. The milking process and also the baby goats. The hike up the mountain is so beautiful!! The view is breathtaking!! And when do you get to walk up a mountain with so many goats? So I'm saying, you don't want to miss this, do it!

Fabulous experience! Tommy Pedersen

Just amazing! Doing an activity that you don't have the chance to do every day is great. Miguel, the guide, is awesome; he knows how to motivate people and really makes the activity a part of it. If you have the chance, just come. Everything was perfect The shepherds are also super warm, they know their goats and treat them well
