Highlights

The Montado — Europe’s Most Biodiverse Woodland. The cork oak montado is one of Europe’s most remarkable ecosystems, home to hundreds of species of plants and animals. A guided stop among centuries-old trees brings this rarely visited landscape to life.

The Story of Cork, on the Ground. Understanding how cork is harvested — once every nine years, by hand, without harming the tree — is a different experience when you’re standing in the middle of a montado grove with a local guide. This is where the story makes sense.

Rice Fields in the Alentejo — A Rare Aside. The Alentejo is known for cork, wheat, and olive oil — not rice. The passage through the estate’s working rice fields is an unexpected and memorable detail that surprises most guests.

Wild Alentejo Terrain, Off-Road. The Jeep route crosses mato, ancient cork oak groves, open farmland, and riverside paths in one of the least-visited stretches of the Alentejo Litoral — landscape that hasn’t changed in centuries.

The Vale do Gaio Approach. Guests who arrive via the Vale do Gaio dam road experience one of the most dramatic natural entrances to any estate in the region — a road across the top of the dam with sweeping reservoir views.

A fantastic way to discover the real Alentejo Tommy Pedersen

The private Jeep tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Driving through the cork oak forest, farmland and riverside trails made us feel like we were discovering a side of Portugal that most visitors never see. Our guide explained how cork is harvested and why the montado ecosystem is so important. Beautiful scenery and a very authentic experience.

Unique! Nikki Biggs

We loved exploring the estate by Jeep. The ancient cork oak trees are impressive and it was fascinating to learn that cork can be harvested from the same tree every nine years without damaging it. The rice fields were also a complete surprise! Because the tour is private, everything felt relaxed and personal. Highly recommended if you want to experience rural Portugal away from the usual tourist routes.

Just wonderful! Walter Zollinger

Such a memorable experience! The off-road Jeep ride through the wild landscape was great fun, but what really made the tour special was learning about the cork oak trees and the traditional way cork is produced. The landscape around the estate is stunning and incredibly peaceful. We also loved the drive past the Vale do Gaio dam on the way there. Definitely worth the visit.
